1848 - Chicago's first locomotive arrives, setting the stage for Chicago's development as one of
the largest railroad cities in the world
1848 - The Market Building, Chicago's first City Hall, is built on State Street
1869 - Old Water Tower built. This historic structure is one of the only survivors of the
Great Chicago Fire of 1871
1871 - The Great Chicago Fire destroys much of the city, including the Market Building
(in 1997, the Chicago City Council absolved Mrs. O'Leary's cow from all blame)
1872 - Named for Ulysses S. Grant, spacious Grant Park was formed on top of fire debris that
had been pushed into Lake Michigan
1885 - The nine-story Home Insurance Building - the world's first skyscraper - opens
on LaSalle Street
1895 - The 14-story Reliance Building - now the historic Hotel Burnham location - opens
1914 - Wrigley Field, now one of the country's oldest and most storied ballparks, is built
1942 - Chicago Cubs install baseball's first ballpark organ at Wrigley Field
1973 - Sears Tower completed. At 1,353 feet, it is, at the time, the tallest building in the world
and remains one of the tallest today
1979 - 100-story John Hancock Center opens
2001 - Grant Park expanded north to form Chicago Millennium Park.
