Chicago's Artful Playground: Millennium Park
We got all wound up when, back in 2005, the city decided we needed a park like no other - one with art installations, an outdoor stage, ice-skating rink, restaurant, manicured garden, and oh so much more. And thankfully, our hotel is located mere blocks from it.
The 2.5-acre attraction sits just east of Hotel Burnham and hugs picturesque Lake Shore Drive. The lake and skyline views are only part of the eye candy. Jutting from the middle of the park is Anish Kapoor's famous metal bean-like sculpture, "Cloud Gate." (You'll love checkout out your funhouse-like reflection in it.) Equally, if not more, impressive is artist Jaume Plensa's Crown Fountain, 50-foot-tall glass blocks that face each other and project images across a shallow reflecting pool.
OnceSpecial events happen at Millennium Park throughout the year, and summer is an especially active time, with live concerts at a Frank Gehry-designed pavilion, alfresco art exhibits and a family fun fest. But it's worth a visit in winter, too, if not only for the huge ice-skating rink.
